Smitten With Kittens?

Is there anything cuter than a tiny kitten? How about TWO tiny kittens! This adorable pair have just been adopted into a wonderful forever home. They are particularly lucky to have been welcomed into a very loving home where they will be pampered and petted to their hearts content. Sadly, not all felines are so lucky. Unfortunately, its the time of year when most shelters and rescue groups have an overflow of kittens and cats looking for permanent homes.

Cats make wonderful pets – they perfectly balance social interaction with independence and because they are generally very clean and healthy, they usually involve minimal work. They are however a long-term commitment – they will need to be spayed or neutered and they will need appropriate food and regular veterinary care to stay in the best of health throughout their life.

Cats are tremendous company for people that live alone and are perfectly content if you are at work all day. A single kitten or cat can be happy on their own, however, many people will opt to get two together – which is a great idea! Littermates or kittens of the same age are particularly fun and will keep you entertained for hours with their hilarious antics. However, if you aren’t quite up for kitten escapades, there are usually plenty of more mellow adult cats looking for laid back homes.

It is very important that all new cats and kittens (especially those going into homes that already have a cat) have a blood test done for Feline Leukemia Virus (FeLV) and Feline Immunodeficiency Virus (FIV) and a stool sample checked for intestinal parasites. Some shelters such as The Animal Assistance Group (TAAG) does FELV&FIV testing prior to adopting cats out and they are closing/relocating their current physical facility – so they would love to find permanent homes for many of the cats currently in their care ASAP.

So, what do you think? Do you have room in your home and your heart for a (or possibly another) feline friend or two?
