Why We Love ‘Lap Spays’ at Sault Ste. Marie Animal Clinic!

This is Maggie, a 14 mon old lab mix who underwent a ‘Lap Spay’ to remove her ovaries so that she will not go into heat or get pregnant and to reduce her risk of certain types of cancers and other health problems. At Sault Ste. Marie Animal Clinic, dogs over 15-20 lbs undergo Laproscopic Ovariectomy instead of a traditional spay. This technique uses specialized surgical camera’s and instruments to remove the ovaries through two tiny incisions (similar idea to people having their gall bladders removed or ‘tubes tied’ laparoscopically). Since the incisions are smaller and there is much less manipulation of the tissues and abdominal muscles, the dogs seem to recover very quickly with apparently significantly less discomfort.
