💩Intestinal parasites (aka worms) in pets are not only gross – they can pose a significant health threat to both the four legged and two legged members of your family – especially the very young, the elderly and the immunocompromised.
💩Pets that frequent areas where other dogs and animals go to the bathroom are at the highest risk but even pets who do not have direct contact with other animals can be at risk of being infected by parasite eggs present in their environment.
💩Pet parents know that routinely checking fecal or stool samples (aka POOP) from their four-legged family members is an important part of keeping everyone healthy. Adult worms are not usually passed in the stool – and their eggs are microscopic – so you can’t tell just by looking at your pet’s bowel movements if they have intestinal worms.
💩The traditional way of checking for intestinal parasites in pets involves preparing the stool sample with a special solution that makes any eggs present float to the top (and onto a microscope slide) which can then be checked under a microscope. This is accurate and effective IF the parasites are actively shedding their eggs at the time the sample is collected.
💩A newer technology available at Idexx Diagnostic Laboratories called a Fecal Antigen Test checks the stool sample for the presence of proteins or antigens from the parasites – ie the parasite does not have to be laying eggs to be detected – making it even more sensitive and accurate than a routine fecal floatation.
