Today, Dr.’s Palmer Chihuahua (from Wawa!), Delilah, (17 wks) received the final vaccinations of her ‘Puppy Booster Series’ including her rabies vaccination. To help make the whole experience more palatable for Delilah, Tara distracted her with tiny bits of canned food through-out the exam – Delilah didn’t even seem to notice the needles! Making experiences positive for puppies is part of our #FearFree goal 😊
DYK puppies get important antibodies from their mothers both before birth and immediately afterwards that protect them for their first few weeks of life? As that protection wears off, the puppy’s body starts to produce its own antibodies to common diseases and viruses. “Puppy Boosters” play a crucial role in making sure the puppy produces its own protection. Starting between 6-8 wks of age, most puppies should receive core booster vaccinations (against Distemper, Hepatitis, Parvovirus and Parainfluenza) every 3-4 wks until they are over 16 wks old. Depending on the area and the puppy’s lifestyle, they may also be vaccinated against things such as Leptovirus, Lyme Disease, Kennel Cough and Influenza. Rabies vaccination is usually done at the time of the final booster in the series.
