If your summer getaway does not include pets and your dog will be going to a boarding kennel instead, now is a good time to make sure he or she is up to date on their Kennel Cough vaccination. Boarding kennels tend to be busy during the summer months and any time you have a large number of dogs together under stressfull conditions, there is an increased risk for being exposed to Canine Infectious Respiratory Disease Complex (CIRD) – more commonly referred to as ‘Kennel Cough’.
Vaccination against Kennel Cough requires a separate vaccination (with a small amount of fluid squirted directly into your dog’s nose or the mouth) given over and above their other vaccines (Rabies/Distemper/Parvovirus/Lepto) and it should be given at least one week prior to the visit to the kennel in order for the immune system to have a chance to respond properly.
Other dogs who might benefit from a Kennel Cough booster are dogs who go to the groomer, dog park or anywhere that they are likely to encounter other dogs of unknown vaccination status. Please feel free to call us at 705-759-8888 for more information or to schedule an appointment.
