A Few Tips To Help Avoid A Trip To The Emergency Vet This Labour Day Weekend

On behalf of the team at Sault Ste. Marie Animal Clinic, Hudson & Delilah would like to wish everyone a SAFE, healthy, and happy Labour Day Weekend!! 🐶🐶🐱

Okay, maybe not everyone needs a ‘Predator Vest’ like Delilah’s 😆, but here are a few friendly tips to help avoid a trip to the Emergency Vet this weekend:

👉Never underestimate what your pet can (and will) get into!

👉Please make sure all garbage, medications and THC containing products are secured well out of your pet’s reach. THC containing edibles are very attractive to dogs and can cause a double whammy of both chocolate and THC toxicity.

👉While it may be tempting to share some of your Labour Day Barbecue with your pet, we strongly advise against this – doing so can result in anything from gastrointestinal upset (ie vomiting and diarrhea) to a life threatening inflammation of the pancreas (pancreatitis). Some human foods such as grapes, onions and chocolate can be toxic to pets.

👉Feeding your pet bones can result in anything from a broken tooth to a life threatening bowel obstruction – not worth the risk!! Corn cobs are another common cause of intestinal blockages.

👉Any products containing the sweetener Xylitol (gum, some candies, some peanut butter) can be very toxic to dogs.

👉 Fishing bait and lures can be irresistible to both cats and dogs

👉Keeping your pet on a leash can help avoid altercations with wildlife (think porcupines!), cars and even other pets (Just like people, your pet might be a fan of everyone coming to visit😉)

👉Never leave your pet unattended in a hot vehicle – heat stroke can happen quickly and it can be fatal

👉 Don’t forget their monthly parasite preventive – as the weather starts to cool off, fleas will stay on the pets longer and be more likely to come indoors. Ticks can be active anytime the weather rises above 0 degrees Celsius.

Sault Ste Marie Animal Clinic will be closed Monday Sept. 1 2025. We will reopen Tuesday September 2nd at 8:00 am.

Wishing everyone a safe and healthy long weekend!
