As of August 1, 2024 there will be new requirements to bring your dog into the United States.
• The primary reason for the change appears to be an attempt to reduce the risk of human exposure to Rabies by reducing potential contact with dogs of unknown status from potentially higher risk areas (for example dogs from Rescue Organizations from other countries where Rabies may be more of a concern)
• Currently, there are still a lot of questions and uncertainty about how these new requirements will affect Canadian dog owners wanting to vacation in the United States (or as is the case for many Saultites, simply travel through the US to Southern Ontario) and how strictly they will be enforced at the border.
• If your dog has not been microchipped, it would be a good idea to do so before or at the time of their next rabies vaccination and if you plan to travel to the US in the next few months, we recommend initiating the process of getting the CDC Certificate for Live Dog Importation sooner rather than later!
